Frank knew Antonio would come to him A feeling as sure as a death wish, certain horseflies would kill him. Antonio, Dangello’s brother, clenched his jaw. He sees Frank, resolved to get him back. And Frank would make sure of it. He saw how Dangello trapped him with each spin of the girl. With each laugh he was lured. And Frank heard a buzzing beneath him, a buzzing that stopped him from sleeping, like the biting of a hundred horseflies, like a thousand knives in his side. And Antonio was his savior, so Frank stood up before him and said: “He cried when he died. Did you know that? Said ‘oh no, boohoo, where’s my brother? Why didn’t he save my retard faggot ass?’ Don’t you have the same mother? A different father, I can tell. ‘O my whore of a mother! He cried before I killed him. I don’t know if he shit himself, but he sure as hell went and pissed himself. No one would touch him there was so mush piss. More piss than blood is what they said. I read that in the papers. It said ‘More piss than blood.’ I made him famous!” Then a knife slid in Frank’s ribs. He could feel the blades metal coldness. His heartbeat. And then silence. And as Frank lay dying he said this: “Looks like all blood and no piss!” And then Antonio heard a buzzing, like a swarm of flies on a dead deer, getting louder and louder and louder.

William Eppinger throws open the door of his small home, and his mouth fills up with vomit and it sprays out thick, parts hanging from his chin. There’s a sickness surrounding him and a darkness at the edges of his eyes and his latest batch of gin he’ll be sending it away to the streets of Winnipeg for a greater profit made, and all because he found the fruit of the juniper such a bounty he would loot of the juniper. He filled bucket after bucket with them, and ever since he felt a strangeness growing within. William knows in his gut there grows a sickness feeding off his mind and soul. He can hear things that he shouldn’t hear, as if junipers were growing out both his ears. There’s a sickness in William, in the kitchen as if it were a guest, infecting him, and it speaks to him, says “William! I am more than just your gin! I’m the darkness of the juniper, and I’m stronger than you.” There’s two men walking through the forest, he can hear them breaking branches. (it says) “William, get your gun.”

Tony came up waddling to Thomas and wanted to talk, said “An evil man swears, Thomas. And you’re not evil enough. You come and feed me every day. And who would do that? You would do that! A man like you is rare nowadays. You’re no bad man! You’re a good man! Evil can’t help but play its tricks. And those devil children are rotten kids. They treat you something horrible... The good book, Tommy, you’re a man of the bible. Your sins are all forgiven. I think you can help by forgiving the children. Evil men swear, but the good beat children.” Tony spoke to Hrechosy at feeding time every day. Thomas told him all the tricks those rotten children played. “For if their mother doesn’t beat them, who should do that? You should do that! And if they bruise up like a fruit, know they’ll go to heaven sooner. I’ll always love you, Tom.” But then one day Tony was gone, and Thomas couldn’t find him anywhere. Wasn’t in the coop or the barn or the stable. Then he heard a child laughing. He came around the corner and saw the child was strangling Tony with one hand, a knife in the other hand. And Thomas saw him cut the head off of the chicken. Evil men swear, but the good beat children.

The Schoenberg mother read in the Free Press ELMER SCHOENBERG GONE gone to Kenora, hit by a driver, who buried him in a swamp. But it’s wrong... He isn’t dead, he’s just gone. Oh my boy... Down Osbourne to the village psychic. Why can’t I see my baby boy? I’d give anything to stop worrying. The psychic shuffled cards on the table. Five cards in a cross of truth. “The Five of Swords shows the loss you have suffered. The Star shows a healed youth. In the dark floats your child. In a pool. There is knowledge in the water. All I can see is a naked tree, old and decaying. Alive but dying. The High Priestess helps defy science, her thoughts lead you to the Star. The Devil, the masked man, a secret in veils. The Fool shows what is to come. It’s good. The Fool’s just a name, it means good. All knowledge is born from ignorance. You’ll find your boy, just look for a pool and a rotting tree. That’s where he’ll be. That’ll be $10.93, Mrs. Schoenberg.”

As Len Novak crossed Strugeon Creek, a small bus stamped with C.F.B. stopped. The driver’s snuffed up lips spit and says: “Hey, are you a base kid? You better jump on in! I’ll take you wherever you’re going. Base kids, they’re a different lot. There’s UFOs here, believe or not. Or those abandoned bunkers they meet at! One said he heard the Titanic sinking. Not recently, back when it was happening. The signal bouncing through repeater towers. And when they heard it, they ran away! The cowards! Al Capone would use them for his alcohol. Rumours love a mind that don’t know bugger all. But some of them are true, like Percy Fink’s little brother. He went to university, came back and killed his mother. Drove the streets of Beausejour screaming something about the jews, naked with a rifle on a motorcycle, and a whole lot of screws loose. There’s a lot of fucked up people here! There’s something in the water. Or what about Dean Ryde who locked his mother in the freezer. When they found her sometime later, Dean had even tried to eat her. There’s something in the water, in the air, or in the woods. There’s something around Molson that haunts the neighbourhood. Gregor’s just the latest. And I bet that’s where you’re going.” And the driver stopped at Molson Road, and said: “Hey kid, you just better know what you’re doing out there.” There’s a lot of fucked up people here. There's something in the water.
