steers his jeep with his knees
pours a small tim’s
into a robin’s travel mug
few glugs of baileys
from the bottle under his seat
faded tan prowler
faded orange stripe in tow
twelve-footer on the roof rack
he welded himself, let's go

beads of condensation cling
to the old vienna bottle
in his right hand
scans the wrong side
of a nameless nolalu road
for the turnoff to canthook lake

white tail on a pink jig
three pickerel on a stringer
putt-putts the twelve and a half horse
to shore

cleanses himself with water
from an upturned home
depot bucket after he sweats
in his makeshift plywood sauna

glowing in the smoulder
of a pallet fire
long way from
anything at all
moon rising
smell of deet
belly full of fish
and old vienna
cracks the blue cap
off another
